Imperial Point residents raise money for Pet
Oxygen Masks
See below for Free Fire Alert Stickers |
On the night of April 17, 2007 our good works made a difference.
Regarding a fire in WIlton Manors, Division Chief Robert Edgar writes, "These
masks literally saved the lives of two cats found in a building fire on April
17, 2007. Please share this with your association and all the kind
contributors, you clearly made a difference in our community."
How did
this come to be?
Led by area residents Candace Rich and Sue Fuhr and
with the generosity of the Imperial Point Board of Governors and residents, we
have donated pet oxygen masks to the City of Fort Lauderdale. Prior to this,
while the County had them, the City of Fort Lauderdale did not.
| Pets are often more
vulnerable to smoke inhalation in fires because they hide. However, human
oxygen masks don't fit properly on animals, and many pets die. These little
cup-shaped pet masks were originally developed for use by veterinarians and
seal around the muzzle of an animal tighter than a human mask. This helps
firefighters deliver the right amount of oxygen to the pet. |
 |
 |
Each pet oxygen mask set costs $60 and includes three
sizes, small, medium and large. One set can help revive dogs, cats, ferrets,
rabbits, guinea pigs, even birds.
After the fire at our neighbor Joe
Andreula's house (N.E. 57th Street) we knew that fire can happen to any one of
us and these pet masks will be needed. All across America pet owners are
raising the money to furnish their fire departments with these masks and we
have done it too.

We were aided by H.E.L.P. Animals, an Orange
City, Florida, nonprofit group which furnishes the masks around the country.

And we went one step further. We printed 4" x 4"
yellow stickers that alert firefighters to animals inside the home in case no
one is around when a fire breaks out. (see sample at right) These stickers will
be distributed in Imperial Point. If you would like 2 of these stickers, send a
self-addressed STAMPED envelope to: Candace Rich 2167B N.E.
